Delhi Tightens the Screws on Pollution as BJP Government Rolls Out Strict New Measures

The BJP government has announced strict measures to combat Delhi’s worsening pollution, making PUCC certificates mandatory for vehicles, banning trucks carrying construction material, and restricting the entry of non-BS6 private vehicles, aiming to significantly improve air quality in the capital.

As air quality concerns intensify in the national capital, the BJP-led government has announced a series of stringent steps aimed at curbing pollution and improving Delhi’s deteriorating environment. The measures, implemented through coordinated action at both the central and state levels, signal a tougher enforcement regime targeting major sources of urban air pollution.

Under the new framework, all vehicles operating in Delhi must carry a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC). Authorities have made it clear that petrol and diesel vehicles found without this mandatory certification will not be permitted on the roads, marking a significant push toward stricter compliance and accountability among motorists.

In a decisive move to address dust pollution, the government has imposed a complete ban on trucks transporting construction materials into the city. Officials say construction-related dust has been a persistent contributor to Delhi’s poor air quality, and restricting the movement of such vehicles is expected to bring immediate relief in pollution levels.

Further tightening environmental norms, the entry of private vehicles that do not meet BS6 emission standards has been prohibited within Delhi. This step aligns with broader national emission goals and is intended to reduce the load of highly polluting vehicles on city roads.

Commenting on the government’s actions, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the measures reflect a serious commitment to cleaning Delhi’s air and taking firm action against pollution. He emphasized that sustained enforcement of these rules would play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and improving the quality of life for residents.

With these decisions, the government has underscored its intent to move beyond advisory measures and enforce concrete restrictions. As Delhi continues to grapple with recurring air quality crises, the effectiveness of these steps will be closely watched, both as an immediate response to pollution and as part of a longer-term strategy to restore cleaner air in the capital.
